Shakespeare finds a line from the words you remember, as you type. “to be or not” finds Hamlet 3.1.56. “wherefor art thou romeo” finds Romeo and Juliet 2.2.33, typo and all. A line remembered across two lines comes back as one result: “we are such stuff as dreams are made of” finds The Tempest 4.1.156-157, where the play says “made on”.

Modern words reach the old ones, so “you” finds thou and thee, and “has” finds hath. Lines that keep your words in your order rank higher.

A reference goes straight to its line: “hamlet 3.1.56”, “ham 3.1” or “sonnet 18”. speaker:juliet keeps only Juliet’s lines, and in:tempest only that play’s. Stage directions are searchable too, so “exit pursued by a bear” finds The Winter’s Tale 3.3.58. Open a result to read the scene around it.

The text is the PlayShakespeare.com edition, used under the GNU Free Documentation License, version 1.3 or later. Line numbers follow that edition, so they can differ from other editions’, most of all in scenes of prose.

The search engine is wasm-static-search, Rust compiled to WebAssembly, and it runs in your browser. After the first visit it works offline, and it installs from your browser’s menu.
