Globe

Open the tool

Globe turns to a place as you type its name. It knows 57,531 places: the countries, cities, 49,146 landmarks, and the US national parks, monuments and wildlife refuges. “eiffel” finds the Eiffel Tower and “bombay” finds Mumbai. Among places that match equally well, the better known comes first, judged by how many Wikipedias have an article on each.

in:oregon keeps the places in Oregon, and is:landmark and is:refuge keep one kind. On their own they frame every place that passes, so in:oregon shows the whole state. Parks, monuments and refuges are drawn with their outlines, finer as you zoom in.

Arrows turn the globe, + and - zoom, and 1 to 9 jump from the whole globe to as close as it goes. In the search box, hold Alt for those. Up and down, or j and k outside the box, step through results.

Countries and cities are Natural Earth, public domain. Landmarks, other names, and how well known each place is come from Wikidata, CC0. Parks, monuments and refuges are PAD-US 4.1 from the USGS Gap Analysis Project, public domain.

The search engine is wasm-static-search, Rust compiled to WebAssembly, and it runs in your browser. The first visit downloads 6.3 MB once. After that it opens offline too, and it installs from your browser’s menu.
